Revealed: NSW to commit to new emission reduction targets | AlexSmithSMH micksfoley

NSW is preparing a new ambitious emissions reduction target to address climate change and will commit to lowering greenhouse gases by 35 per cent by 2030.has been told Environment Minister Matt Kean will commit to the new target, signed off by state cabinet, which will bolster NSW's previous target of zero emissions by 2050.

"I will be announcing a plan to do that for NSW and I hope that other states and territories will do likewise." "We need to be doing our bit to make sure we mitigate or adapt to these more extreme weather events happening, and we do our bit to abate carbon and reduce the impact of climate change.""We've got to stop making climate change a matter of religion and we've got to start making it a matter of science and the science says that we need to reduce the impact of global warming by 2 degrees and to do that we need to achieve zero emissions by 2050," Mr Kean said.

Mr Kean said NSW would not use carry-over credits and the state would do "its bit to meet our obligations".Carry-over credits refer to an accounting measure where a country counts historical emissions reduction which exceeded previous international goals against its current target.
