The Northern Territory government has indicated that $180 million in domestic violence funding will start flowing this month, but there will be changes to where it's spent. Sector workers say the need for this funding in the Territory is 'enormous'.

The NT government has promised that $180 million in funding for domestic violence will start rolling out by the end of January. The Territory Government has indicated while new domestic violence funding will start being spent this month changes will be made in what is funded.

The spending has been delayed by the Country Liberal Party government's determination to carry out an audit of existing spending in order to find out why its data has suggested domestic violence has apparently increased by 82 per cent in the last eight years."When you create a framework, it's just that, framework, what you need to make sure is that how you execute the intent of that framework actually achieves the results you're after," she said.

Rachel Uebergang, the regional manager of the YWCA, which will deliver $500,000 of that, said it will be vital to enable her service to deliver crisis support to women and children quickly. Ms Cahill renewed the NT government's call for the Commonwealth to change its way of funding the territory to a domestic violence rate based formula.

She said both are allocations of funds from existing national budget commitments already made to tackle domestic violence.
