Steve O’Keefe says Wednesday’s Big Bash finals match against the Adelaide Strikers at the SCG could be his final outing as a professional cricketer | tomdecent SMHsport
that this could be his final season. The 37-year-old was in a sentimental mood on Tuesday as he was quizzed on whether he was about to retire after 17 seasons as a professional cricketer.
“I think it would be tough to come back next year. It’d be highly unlikely,” O’Keefe said. “I will see how I’m going in November. If I’ve regained the love and the bug for it, and play grade cricket, and [if] there’s an opportunity here at the Sixers, then potentially. But that’s so far off and out of my sights at the moment.“At times it can wear you down to a point of where you’re probably not willing to do all the work you used to do.
O’Keefe, who lost his NSW contract in 2020, doesn’t believe in fairytales, but given the way he’s bowling at the moment you’d be bold to rule it out. “Regardless of where we finish up, you’d love a fairytale but you just don’t get them,” O’Keefe said. “I certainly didn’t get one with the Blues. That came as a bit of a shock.
“If it was the last game, I’d be extremely grateful. I feel like I’ve got everything out of my own personal career I could have. It [would be] nice to get the three-peat. If it’s here in front of a home crowd, so be it. I’ve had an absolute ball playing this game and feel really privileged.”
