Old People’s Home gives teenagers a shake-up | Bridget McManus
Old People’s Home for Teenagers, narrator Annabel Crabb describes adolescents as “the most notoriously difficult demographic there is”. It’s an accurate reading of this age group’s PR problem, according to the series’ geriatrician, Dr Stephanie Ward.“After older people, teenagers face the second-highest rate of age discrimination,” Ward says. “That’s the beauty of doing an intergenerational experiment.
“We assume that teenagers are full of fun and have lots of friends and they’re socially vibrant. But that’s not always the case. With COVID and social media, you find that sometimes they’re not. They’re lonely and they have got some personal issues around mental health and anxiety and peer pressure and body image. A lot of adolescents put on a persona which isn’t really them.
“We knew that the nature of the interactions were going to be completely different than what you have with four-year-olds,” Ward says. “Four-year-olds are spontaneous and energetic. Teenagers are at the beginning of their journey in young adulthood. They’ve got opinions and they’re also capable of much deeper friendships and connections.”
