A new British study suggests the risk of reinfection with Omicron is more than five times higher than Delta and shows no convincing evidence of being a milder variant of COVID-19.
In terms of reinfection rates the study concluded: “Controlling for vaccine status, age, sex, ethnicity, asymptomatic status, region and specimen date, Omicron was associated with a 5.4-fold higher risk of reinfection compared with Delta."
“This study provides further evidence of the very substantial extent to which Omicron can evade prior immunity given by both infection or vaccination,” study lead Professor Neil Ferguson said.Stream the latest news on COVID-19 with Flash. “For example, we have no data on the cellular immune response which is now probably driving effectiveness of vaccines.”Dr Dix also said some of the conclusions differ to the data coming out of South Africa where vaccines are holding up well against death and severe death a present.
