More than 2,500 cases of the reportedly more transmissible variant have been recorded in the last 24 hours. "Our aim is still to keep society as open as possible," she said, adding that more restrictive measures introduced in the spring of 2020 could be avoided "because we have vaccines". The latest data brings the total number of infections during the pandemic to more than 11.1 million, while the UK also registered a further 111 deaths from the virus, taking the death toll to more than 147,000.
The gap between shots is currently five months but the French government is concerned about the spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant.
