“So it’s a question of not taking your eye off the other threats and still being realistic about the scale of a superpower that’s embarking on a course against many countries, including ours of only 25 million. And if you’ve got only so many analysts, and you’ve only got so many resources within ASD or the NSA [National Security Agency], GCHQ [Government Communications Headquarters], or the CIA – they have had to pivot and to make decisions to reallocate tasks – that’s a huge concern.
“We need to learn from the mistakes of the 1930s. We’ve gone through a period over the last 10 or 15 years of appeasement when many analysts were predicting exactly where we are today. Many countries have been compromised because of the trading relationship with China and the scale and the wealth that we’ve all benefited from. Australia needs to be in a position of strength to provide that deterrence.
In that world, China will demand that its vassal states stop trading with Australia. “In that environment, there’s a huge cost to our sovereignty, both in terms of our national security and our ability to defend ourselves, but also economically. So, I think your point is well made about there being an economic consequence in a shift in the trading relationship with China, either with or without conflict, because of the path China is on, not because of anything Australia has done.
Dutton believes that Australia, under the leadership of Albanese and foreign affairs shadow Penny Wong, would think it can “talk it out with Beijing and find resolution. That’s not the assessment of President Biden, it’s not the assessment of other world leaders, and it would be a waste of valuable time – time that we don’t have. There is at this election a huge difference between the two parties on national security.
