The same New Yorkers who days ago were shut up in their apartments to prevent the coronavirus spread, swarmed into streets, lit with outrage for racism in America

It sparked anxious debate among friends and neighbours who wanted to join in but, after months of social distancing, were wary of the risk. One, a life-long New Yorker with some underlying health issues, decided to sit out the protests. Many have simply put on their masks and gloves and thrown caution to the wind.

It was thrilling to ride loops around Columbus Circle, a major intersection on the edge of Central Park that is normally heaving with traffic, and which now stood empty.

On the Upper East Side of Manhattan, a mass gathering sat silently on the street outside the mayor's residence, Gracie Mansion, for eight minutes - the length of time it took to extinguish Floyd's life.
