One tourist in a dirty pair of shoes could unleash a disease which would devastate Australia's $80 billion livestock industry. 9News

One tourist in a dirty pair of shoes could unleash a disease which would devastate Australia's $80 billion livestock industry.to hear, now that deadly foot and mouth disease has reached the popular holiday hotspot.

"It's not good enough," he said, despairing that Australians bound for Bali just don't understand the gravity of the situation. The biggest economic implication of an Australian case would be producers losing access to global export markets, potentially for years, until the disease was contained and eradicated.

NSW Minister for Agriculture Dugald Saunders said the high number of Bali-bound tourists was a massive and potentially catastrophic risk factor, and he had written to counterparts in Canberra calling for stricter measures at the border.Mandatory foot baths for people before they board planes in Indonesia was an idea still on the table, Saunders said.

"We saw a swift closing of borders with COVID, and I believe similar measures should be discussed for foot-and-mouth, and if not flight suspensions, then quarantine for returning passengers," she said. "For those people that are returning it might be as simple as throwing away those thongs and actually getting a new pair of shoes when you arrive," he said."We have too much lose."Foot and mouth disease is far harder to track among sheep populations, compared to cattle, because they are not tagged the same way.
