Ahead of an election-year budget, a new union-linked group is questioning the Qld government’s commitment to cost-of-living help – and urging people to join the fight.

A major Queensland union is behind a quietly launched community campaign to pressure politicians, including the state Labor government, to push to expand cost-of-living support for members and the broader public., urge residents to “vote for more cost-of-living relief” and help families still struggling “even if inflation is slowing”.

“ putting pressure on them to spend every dollar of the coal royalties into the cost-of-living stuff,” he said, rather than on activities such as paying down debt. Scott said an element of the campaign would also focus on cost-of-living top-ups negotiated in public sector wage agreements last year now likely to be non-existent if inflation falls as expected, still leaving staff with real wage cuts over recent years and no bargaining rounds in 2024.

“We thought it was more inclusionary to work under a broader title … it’s about delivering for union members, but it’s also about delivering for the broader community,” Scott said. With byelections this weekend and a state election in October, the new site also calls for people to “add your voice” to the campaign via an online form requesting names and emails, along with an option to disclose their state electorate or address.
