When iconic public buildings become political canvases, where is the border to be drawn?

Since it began lighting itself for special events, the Opera House has tried to avoid turning its sails into a political billboard.

The Opera House has only picked sides when it is confident that the colours enjoy near-unanimous local endorsement. It has declined to make a “Yes” statement on its sails, disappointing many staff and patrons, but avoiding politics. Its missteps have been rare, such as when it was lit in 2018 for The Everest horse race, seen as a celebration of gambling and a violation of the Opera House’s own policy against illuminating its sails for “corporate identities”.

But how fringe are those whose feelings about the new war are complicated by family connections or personal history? Potential controversy, or disunity, can be measured by numbers. The terrorist attacks previously mourned on the Opera House sails could safely be assumed to have minimal local support.
