The operators who run holiday hotspot Hamilton Island, one of Queensland’s Whitsunday Islands, have underpaid thousands of workers, the Fair Work Ombudsman said on Thursday. Hamilton Island Enterprises Limited , which operates accommodation, businesses in the airport and marina, as well as restaurants, retail stores, and leisure and recreation facilities, has now paid back a total of $28.1 million to those employed across its various businesses.
The affected workers were employed under more than 20 different Awards, with the majority of those who were underpaid covered by the Hospitality Industry Awards 2010 and 2020. The underpayments made between December 2014 and December 2022 were discovered after a FWO investigation into the wages and entitlements of salaried staff was launched in 2020, following requests for assistance.
