Local officials in towns and cities across the island have started taking matters into their own hands and have begun sending municipal employees to raise fallen poles, collect downed cables and speed the restoration of electricity.
“Puerto Rico is surviving because of all the help coming from Diasporicans,” said Sebastian Sanchez, a personal friend who texted me from the island just before he lost power. Diasporican is a term to describe Puerto Ricans who moved to the mainland, coined by Bronx-born poet Maria Teresa “Mariposa” Fernández in a celebrated 1993 poem entitled “Ode to the Diasporican.”to allow emergency crews and municipal workers to help with the crisis.
“The government in Puerto Rico is not equipped and people are suffering,” Acevedo said. “We are receiving funds and should be prepared.” She said that for months before the September storm, Puerto Ricans had been demanding that the island’s government terminate
