'It is obvious what the United States values more than basic necessities for Jackson's people: war abroad and policing at home,' says ndmarques97 as the majority-Black Mississippi's water crisis continues.

Lorena Quiroz, the executive director of the Immigrant Alliance for Justice and Equity in Jackson, spoke toabout how local organizers are responding to the crisis. “Water is dignity, water is so much. Water is life,” Quiroz said. “We’re in Mississippi.

“We don’t do quotas. Because you know what, we wanna pick up for Grandma, for Auntie, for our neighbor who is disabled. We’re gonna give them the water. The water comes free to us, we give it out freely. All we can do is get the attention of nationals, get the attention and the resources that we so deserve here. Because our people have been enduring these situations for too long, and they deserve dignity, and they deserve water, and they deserve life.

“What’s currently going on with the Jackson water is extremely frustrating and sad for the entire community, just because we feel as if everyone should have access to water, no matter what is happening, and it seems as if we have been forgotten about in a way even though we’d known for so long that our water has not been the best. We’ve been on boil water notice for six going on seven weeks. We can’t even wash our hands with it anymore.

Jackson residents have been relying on water distribution efforts for their daily needs. Governor Reeves deployed 600 National Guard troops on September 1 to aid water distribution, but it has been largely non-profit organizations, churches and charities, not the government,
