The federal government has passed new legislation through the upper house seeking to strengthen digital identification processes for Australians conducting transactions online.
Australians could soon have access to a standardised Digital ID under a government initiative to make verification processes simpler and safer, but the Opposition fears the legislation could leave users"discriminated against".is looking to put in place a nationwide identification scheme through which people can prove their identities online using a government-issued ID and avoid repeatedly sharing sensitive documents like passports, birth certificates and driver’s licences.
The government is seeking to legislative a Digital ID framework which would allow customers to verify their identities online using a standardised myGov ID. Picture: NCA NewsWire/Joel Carrett “We did not believe that the safeguards in the legislation were sufficiently strong, so that those Australians who chose not to have a digital ID were not going to be discriminated against,” the Opposition’s government services spokesperson Paul Fletcher told Sky News host Tom Connell on Tuesday.
About 10.5 million Australians already have myGovIDs set up, which they use to access more than 130 government services including the ATO and Medicare, although the system operates without a legislative framework. The accreditation process, however, could be drawn out for up to two years, leaving digital IDs only applicable to government services in the interim.
