Parents who refuse to send their children to school will be fined or have their income managed if the Country Liberal Party wins the Northern Territory election.

“There are opportunities for income management of parents who neglect their children and Labor hasn’t been utilising that mechanism at all so that’s something we’re really focussed on,” she said. Mrs Finocchiaro said legislation already existed to penalise the parents of truant children, but didn’t rule out making new laws if necessary.“We have to be getting kids to school, we have to be protecting young people who are being neglected and on a pathway to crime and we have to be giving these kids an opportunity to change their life before it’s too late.”
