Users on both mobile and broadband networks were hit by the outage.Optus Mobile customers are reporting their phones showing SOS on the signal indicator, which is a sign that your regular network is down, but that your phone has access to alternate networks in the event of an emergency call.Optus has not yet brought the network back online.
The network has messaged concerned customers, stating"we're aware of an issue impacting connections for some Optus customers," it said."We apologise for any inconvenience caused while we have the issue resolved."What caused the Optus outage?The Optus website says engineers are investigating a network fault.The Department of Home Affairs has said there is no indication the black-out is the result of a cyber-security attack.
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland told 2GB radio that she could not "speculate at this time about whether or not this is something to do with some sort of cyber hack." "All I do know is that it is impacting on Australians, and that customers do want to know what it going on." "I would urge Optus to get that information out to any channels that are possible and to do that as a priority," she said.
