Organisations trying to address social unrest in Alice Springs are calling on the NT's Country Liberal Party to scrap election commitments which will force alcoholics into mandatory treatment programs and bring back cheap alcohol.
A new analysis of hospital and police data in Alice Springs found a significant drop in recorded violence since alcohol restrictions were re-introduced.
The government re-imposed the bans in February 2023, and added restrictions which included closing bottle shops on Mondays and Tuesdays. "It's a really important story to tell just how successful this is, because rather than saying alcohol supply reduction is too hard, we should be looking at what we can do nationally, not just in Alice Springs."
CAAAPU can't keep up with demand from voluntary patients and people often need several stints in the program.
