What is Australia if not the land of delayed film releases? We asked two experts to dish on the reasons it can sometimes take days, weeks or months until international films make it to our cinemas.

Martin Scorcese's Killers of the Flower Moon was one of three 2024 Best Picture-nominated films that enjoyed a simultaneous release — out of 10."We often lead audiences to believe they're hard done by in Australia and the result of that is often a sense of resentment about cinema, and it also leads people to feel more entitled about piracy due to the idea there's a lack of care that results in films not being released here," Ms Flekser says.

So that's possibly part of the reason a film that is all about Christmas ended up being released here on January 11."Generally, won't want to release films at a period of high competition. The Barbie-Oppenheimer moment was really interesting," says Dr Gaunson.
