Rozzi, a Democrat, emerged as a unity candidate in a House where majority control remains unsettled.
Rep. Mark Rozzi is the new Speaker of the House in Pennsylvania. In a surprising move, the narrowly divided Pennsylvania House of Representatives has elected Rep. Mark Rozzi, a Democrat turned independent from Berks County, Speaker of the House.
Rozzi’s coalition was made up of solid support from the 99 Democrats present, but his majority also included the votes of 16 Republicans, including GOP floor leader Rep. Bryan Cutler, R-Lancaster County, and several other ranking GOP members. “We are representatives of the people that send us here. Those people have put the House at the most slimmest of majorities, and while we can not or should not lose out identities or the identities of our districts, it is time to put aside the primacy of our parties and find common ground for the people of this Commonwealth.”
He has been open about the fact that he was sexually abused as a child, and he has said his inspiratiojn to run for the state House came when one of his childhood friends - abused by the same priest - committed suicide.
