Anthony Albanese and other Pacific leaders will look at reinforcing the region’s willingness to help each other on security matters.
Anthony Albanese will join other Pacific leaders in a bid to strengthen the Pacific Islands Forum’s ability to respond to the region’s security concerns and reinforce that member nations should turn to each other for support over outsiders such as China.
Mr Albanese will attend the summit for the full two days on his fourth overseas trip since taking office less than eight weeks ago. The prime minister has rejected criticism about the trip, saying the Morrison government had neglected the Pacific to Australia’s peril, evidenced by the Solomon Islands’ security pact.
“One of the key conversations we’re having at the PIF is how is critical [it is] our regional security comes from within the region,” Mr Conroy said. “We need to meet as a region to consider any proposal that is put to us by our development partners that requires a regional agreement,” she said.after anti-government riots broke out also involved personnel from New Zealand, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
