The NSW Education Department scraps enrolment boundaries for a new public high school in response to an outcry from Jerrabomberra parents. It comes after the government ditched zoning changes for a public primary school earlier this year.
Parents in Jerrabomberra, just outside of Canberra, have successfully lobbied the New South Wales government to change its controversial zoning rules for the new public high school. The decision to rezone enrolment for two public schools in Jerrabomberra has been reversed
Earlier this year, the NSW Education Department announced that children living in Jerrabomberra Heights would not be eligible to attend Jerrabomberra High School, which is due to open next year, or Jerrabomberra's public primary school. "[We] are so relieved that the community consultation has been completed and the information that we passed on to the decision-makers has been realised," she said."We can't wait for 2023 when everyone in our community can attend our brand-new Jerrabomberra High School."
"To learn this year that only half were going to be zoned to the high school was just devastating news, and our community did not accept that." "I've had nonstop meetings with the Minister for Education who has very willingly engaged in all of this, constant communications and discussions with Department of Education directors – from school performance to infrastructure," she said.
Ms Overall said despite the surprise that many locals felt at the sudden announcement, the discussion of changes to zoning had been going on for three years, just without inviting the community to give input.
