Catholic girls graduating from a Catholic school got the surprise of their lives last week when they discovered they really had been attending a Catholic school after all.
Mass confusion broke out when Saint Ursula’s College in Sydney advised its female students they could not bring another female as their partner to the end-of-year formal- something to do with the church’s 2000-year-old doctrine on sexuality.Sure, the Bible says “yada yada”, but hadn’t Australia voted"Yes" to same sex marriage in 2017?“It is written …”Sydney radio hosts slammed the Catholic school, with 2GB’s Chris O’Keefe telling listeners.“I went to a Catholic High School.
God does not sit in heaven, constantly updating his thinking on things so as to more accurately reflect the mood of the Australian people.Radio 2GB’s Ben Fordham told listeners: “We did vote on this back in 2017." “I think in this day and age you should be able to take anyone you like to your Year 12 formal - we are after all talking about teenagers who are close to or over the age of 18.”The girls could be 75 with whiskers and it still wouldn’t change the fact that same-sex relationships aren’t how Catholic schools roll because, well - they’re Catholic.
“These discriminatory practices are not theoretical or academic, as this incident sadly demonstrates, and one in three students attend non-government schools, most of which are religiously affiliated,” Ms Brow said.Ms Brow simply favours discriminating against families enrolled in a Catholic school for its doctrine and in favour of families enrolled in the same school wanting to dismantle the religion's teachings.
If taking your same sex partner to the school formal is a high priority, there are plenty of public schools that will happily accommodate.
