Five people on the Sunshine Coast claim to have no knowledge of the pandemic, but police say the fines should serve as a warning to others to respect social distancing measures introduced to combat coronavirus.
Five young people on the Sunshine Coast have been hit with more than $6,000 in fines over a noisy party overnight. Each person was fined $1334.50 for breaching directions given by Queensland's Chief Health Officer.
Acting Superintendent Jason Overland said the group was"wilfully, recklessly and selfishly" ignoring the rules. "These young people claim to have no knowledge of the pandemic or the directions to maintain social distancing," Superintendent Overland said. He said after a month of reminding the public of the need for social distancing, this served as a warning that police would be handing out fines and punishments to those who break the rules.
This morning Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said a further nine Queenslanders had been diagnosed with coronavirus since yesterday, taking the state's total to 943.
