Mohammed Farooq intended to ‘kill as many nurses as possible’ in terror attack, prosecution alleges
Nathan Newby said that when he asked Mohammed Farooq, pictured, what was in his bag, he was told: ‘It’s just a bomb.’Nathan Newby said that when he asked Mohammed Farooq, pictured, what was in his bag, he was told: ‘It’s just a bomb.’A hospital worker was talked out of detonating a homemade bomb to kill his colleagues when a patient thought he looked upset and tried to “cheer him up”, a court has heard.
Nathan Newby told police he spotted the defendant looking unhappy and went to lift his spirits. He said he asked Farooq what was in his bag and was told: “It’s just a bomb.” Newby described how he began to chat with Farooq, who told him he “just wanted to get them back” and pointed at the hospital. “I just started talking to try and keep him calm. My priority was to get him away from the hospital.”
Prosecutors have told the jury that the pressure cooker bomb Farooq had with him was a viable device, modelled on one used in the 2013 Boston Marathon attacks.
