Sydney’s hospitals continue to be plagued by COVID-19 exposures, with a cluster emerging at an oncology ward in the city’s south and cases tripling within a hospital in the west.

Chief Health Officer Kerry Chant said the second exposure had occurred “across some other wards” but the hospital, including its emergency department, remained open.has seen text messages sent to recent attendees at the hospital’s antenatal clinic and emergency department who have been deemed close contacts of the second exposure.Across the city, four patients and two staff members at a St George Hospital oncology ward have tested positive to COVID-19.

The nurses’ union said more than 120 staff from the Nepean-Blue Mountains Local Health District were in isolation on Monday following the two COVID-19 exposures, the first of which occurred at the hospital’s mental health unit earlier this month.Last week,and the unit’s nurses directed to work at Nepean. “Many of our members in the Nepean-Blue Mountains district are furious and feel as though they’ve been let down,” he said, adding staff had also reported delays in being properly fit-tested for respirator masks. “Only fully vaccinated staff work in the COVID-19 wards and other high-risk areas in the hospital,” they added.

At St George, patients in the oncology ward are in isolation and the ward is closed to new admissions. Staff and patients who were on the ward are being contacted. There were 21 patients on the ward.
