The Mets’ only reliable relievers tossed a scoreless inning apiece to set up the last stand in the ninth inning, when Conforto, who hit a two-run homer in the seventh, tied the game with another two-run shot. Jeurys Familia — yup, him — tossed a scoreless 10th and Sewald, winless in his first 118 big league appearances, threw a perfect 11th.
“It was good to watch it happen,” Sewald said. “Bases loaded, nobody out, I felt like that was the best chance I ever had.” The Mets get at least one more night of…well, “worrying” about their postseason chances sounds like too strong a term. Even a team filled with optimistic personalities understands the impossible math that still exists after staving off elimination.
Losing five straight would also mean the Brewers lost more in five days than they did in the preceding 25 days, a span in which they are 19-4. That’s a lot to ask for, even if crazy things happen in Coors Field and even if you are of the belief the 2019 Mets are a modernized version of the 1999 Mets and thus the Reds will help them out by beating the Brewers.
Nobody channeled his inner Robin Ventura in the clubhouse by blasting a new rallying cry. There were no spins of “Stayin’ Alive,” nor any cueing up ofIt took Conforto all he had not to lapse into the past tense when talking about the predicament faced by the Mets, who had the second-worst record in the NL entering play July 4 but surged into playoff contention by going 15-1 from July 25 through Aug. 10.
