Penfolds has extended its global footprint after secret trails in France, writes Des Houghton.
Chief winemaker Peter Gago said a limited release cabernet, shiraz and merlot began “in a quest to create something real, different, and aspiringly lofty”.It is a marriage of noble grape varieties harvested on opposite sides of the globe in the Barossa Valley and the Bordeaux.Penfolds II carries a price tag of $500 and is a blend of Cabernet , shiraz and merlot . It displays captivating aromas of sweet liquorice and Middle Eastern spice and a melodic palate of dark berry fruit and spice.
All the shiraz in the blend came from the Barossa. Gago hinted at more to come. Penfolds II was “just the start” of Penfolds journey in France, he said. The second wine called Penfolds FWT 585 Cabernet Merlot Petit Verdot 2019 was made entirely from fruit sourced from the Haut-Medoc region. Penfolds FWT is a deep garnet with a crimson edge comprising 53 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 32 per cent merlot and 13 percent petit and sells for $120.Wood said FWT had the Penfolds imprint despite its European origins. She said it was “complex, generous yet refined _ a wine that marks an exciting and brave new chapter at Penfolds.”
The writer of those notes becomes very lyrical in describing the wine’s aromas as “lamb roast pan scrapings, confit duck and a suggestion of hoisin”.The palate is described as “round and full” hinting at “sage fried in butter and served over pan-fried sweetbreads”.
