Two years to the day since Cheng Lei was detained in China, Penny Wong has vowed to continue to advocate for her interests and wellbeing, as her partner opens up about the 'difficult' period.
She was working as a news anchor for the Chinese government's English language broadcaster CGTN when she was secretly taken from her Beijing home on August 13, 2020.
"Our thoughts today are with Ms Cheng's family, including her two young children, with whom she has had no contact since she was detained," she said in a statement. Ms Cheng's partner Nick Coyle told Sky News Australia she was doing all she could to maintain her physical and psychological wellbeing but it was"difficult".

Picture: The Daily Telegraph / SuppliedMr Coyle said Ms Cheng had been allowed to speak to Australian embassy officials once a month but requests to speak with her family have not been honoured by Chinese authorities.
In one picture obtained by The Daily Telegraph, Cheng's son drew himself outside of school gates with the message:"Why does my mum not come with me?"Another picture shows a drawing of her son and daughter smiling together with the message:"We miss u, mum".
