Northern Beaches Council is pushing ahead with a proposed trial of off-leash dog areas on Mona Vale Beach and Palm Beach, despite concerns about irresponsible dog owners who do not control or clean up after their pets | smh_andrew

Dog owners use Mackenzies Bay, a coastal inlet between Bondi and Tamarama beaches, to take their animals off-leash even though Waverley Council does not allow dogs at any beaches or ocean pools.

Northern Beaches councillor Kristyn Glanville said the council’s plan assumed that community concerns can be managed by rules restricting times of use, collection of faeces and limiting the location of the off-leash area.“However, I periodically receive complaints concerning other off-leash dog parks, and other areas frequently used by dog owners, that people aren’t following the rules or have poorly trained dogs,” she said.

Permits could be granted to owners who can show their dog has recall, abide by restrictions and attend an educational session about avoiding the environmental and social impacts of off-leash dogs, Glanville said.
