People with histories of mental illness and violence are successfully challenging police objections to them being given guns.

The number of people with histories of mental illness and violent behaviour successfully appealing police objections to them being issued with firearm licences is a cause for concern for all the community, but particularly for victims of domestic violence.

In one instance, police objected to a man obtaining a gun licence who was previously addicted to heroin and had been medicated in 2007 for schizophrenia and depression. He had also been charged with illegal possession of a pump-action shotgun.

While the latest NSW Firearms Registry figures did not include details of personal collections, the 2020 statistics indicated obsession: the largest individual arsenal belonged to a person who lived in Cremorne with 359 weapons. Other stockpiles included an Eastgardens collector with 305 guns, a Goulburn owner with 300 guns and somebody in Mosman with 297 guns.
