The flag currently only flies atop the bridge on 19 days a year, including Australia Day and during National Reconciliation Week | CameronGooley

The Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council welcomed NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet’s decision to permanently fly the Aboriginal flag on the Harbour Bridge, saying it will make Indigenous people in Sydney feel more included in society.

He said flying the flag on important national landmarks would make Aboriginal people feel like they were valued members of society. He added that he wanted to see the flag pole built as soon as possible, and urged the public service to move quickly. “I welcome that decision, I’ve campaigned for it and I congratulate Cheree Toka, a young Indigenous woman from my electorate here in Dulwich Hill, who has collected tens of thousands of signatures on petitions, who has campaigned so strongly," Mr Albanese said.Mr Albanese also reiterated his commitment to establish a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament if he wins the federal election, due by May.

Saturday’s announcement comes less than a fortnight after the NSW government ruled out permanently flying the flag atop the bridge, initially deferring flag protocol decisions to the Commonwealth. The Premier also unveiled a suite of Indigenous affairs priorities for his government in the months ahead, and acknowledged failings in how his government had addressed inequality faced by First Nations people.
