He was last seen leaving a nightclub with a woman on Wednesday night and had not returned phone calls or been in touch with his family since
the family had engaged a Japanese lawyer to assist them in locating their son who had been able to confirm the 35-year-old had been arrested and was being held in a facility in Tokyo's Asakusa neighbourhood."We don't know why and we haven't been able to speak to him."
He said the family had filed a missing person's report but had been advised that under Japanese regulations, detainees were prevented from contacting anyone for three days after being arrested."We have time to wait before we may or may not hear from him." He said the family was currently speaking to Japanese police and trying to navigate the country's "draconian" system.A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson confirmed they were aware of an Australian man arrested in Japan but were unable to provide further details "for privacy reasons".
Mr Gray's accommodation was located in Shinjuku's Kabukicho district, the city's famous entertainment district, best known for its adult-oriented nightlife and late-night snack bars."What I'm going to do is be there for my son and support him emotionally," he said.
