A Perth teenager addicted to nangs is finally going home after three months in hospital during which she had to relearn to walk.
The 19-year-old was addicted to nitrous oxide – or nangs – gas canisters designed for commercial caterers.
Dr Jessamine Soderstrom, an emergency physician and clinical toxicologist at Royal Perth Hospital, said many patients who came in after abusing nangs needed to stay in hospital for weeks or months, at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars to the healthcare system. “Both of them still had no idea the dangers, I think that’s awful and sad the word still hasn’t got out you know.”In 2018, Royal Perth’s emergency department saw two patients present with complications from chronic use of nitrous oxide.Soderstrom said many patients were adults in their 20s and 30s who were having difficulties walking, ended up in wheelchairs and needed to stay in hospital for weeks and months of rehabilitation.
