Peter Dutton apologises for 'despicable' remarks about Labor rival l nicole_hasham

, telling News Corp "a lot of people have raised this with me. I think they are quite angry that Ms France is using her disability as an excuse for not moving into our electorate”.

Ms France was pushing her son in a stroller in 2011 when she was hit by an out-of-control car and pinned against another vehicle. She has campaigned heavily in Dickson wearing a prosthetic, but uses a wheelchair at her home, about two kilometres outside the electorate. She defended herself against Mr Dutton's criticism, saying she had not yet been able to find a house in Dickson to accommodate her needs, but would do so if she was elected.“My argument with the Labor candidate is about how our respective policies would affect the people of Dickson.

Earlier in the day, Labor indicated it was not going to let the issue go. Campaigning with Labor leader Bill Shorten on the NSW Central Coast, senator Kristina Keneally described Mr Dutton as “a thug”.“Somebody in the Liberal Party needs to stand up to Peter Dutton. That somebody should be Mr Morrison, the Prime Minister.”

Disability advocates have also condemned Mr Dutton's comments, saying they showed a gross ignorance of the day-to-day challenges faced by people with a disability.
