Opposition leader spruiks Frontier Economics modelling but Labor insists ‘it won’t pass the pub test’

Peter Dutton claims his plan to introduce nuclear energy in Australia will “keep the lights on” at a lower cost than the Labor government’s renewables-reliant transition.

However, the modelling assumes demand for electricity would not increase as much as the government expects, despite the increasing use of energy-hungry artificial intelligence and the growing popularity of electric vehicles. Dutton argues his plan to build nuclear reactors at seven sites across Australia would be 44% cheaper over 25 years than Labor’s plan to transition to a system substantially reliant on renewable energy.

The Frontier modelling assumes the first nuclear power plant could be operating by 2036 with the Coalition suggesting it would be earmarked for NSW. Energy expert Simon Holmes à Court, the founder of Climate 200 that has financially-backed pro-climate-action independent MPs, told a parliamentary inquiry on Thursday that even under the most optimistic scenario, which includes the Coalition having sustained control of the lower house and the Senate, a nuclear reactor could not be built and working until 2044.Under Labor’s plan, almost all coal-fired power is due to leave the system within 10 years.
