Peter Dutton has refrained from pledging to scrap Labor’s 2030 climate target, saying a Coalition government would take advice from Treasury and the finance department ahead of making decisions in the country’s best interests. Asked on Sky News whether he would seek to change Labor’s legislated target to reduce emissions by 43 per cent from 1990 levels by 2030 should the Coalition win at the next election, Dutton said: “I would act in our country’s best interests.
“I think it would be responsible to take advice from Treasury and finance and central agencies about the economic conditions that we inherited from Labor,” he said. Dutton next reiterated his view that there was “no prospect, it seems, of the government reaching the target”. “They introduced a bill, which is now law, to increase the price of cars by about $10,000 to help them achieve the 43 per cent target. They’re still not going to get there anyway.
