Myriah Massey might one day look back on the past few weeks as one of the most important stretches of her volleyball life.
Shortly after the second half of her high school career began, the Pickerington Central junior took her final two official college visits, to Florida State and LSU, on consecutive weekends at the end of August and beginning of September. Then she spent a week in Dikili, Turkey, participating in the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball Beach Volleyball U19 World Championships.
“ played a lot smoother match than we did and adjusted really well to the wind. We’d been used to playing teams who swung a lot and they just swung around our blocks,” said Massey, last year’s OCC-Buckeye Division Player of the Year who also earned first-team all-district and honorable mention all-state honors. “It was a great experience. I was hesitant to go, leaving school for a week and going through everything, but now I’m looking forward to getting back next year.
“I’ve known since I was 12 or so and looked up to her. She asked me to play in , about a month or so before because neither of us had partners, and we ended up winning,” Massey said. “We play very different games. I am a quieter player. I don’t show much emotion on the court and she’s a very loud and encouraging player. We mix that way.”Massey traveled to Turkey with her parents, Haze Massey and Tabitha Furlong. Furlong is one of Central’s assistant coaches.
