The Everest has rapidly become one of Australia's biggest horse races but for many the rumours and jostling between slot holders trying to secure horses to compete under their name is part of the spectacle.

About 45,000 Sydneysiders are expected to flood Royal Randwick on Saturday October 14 to see 12 of the best sprinters in the country race over 1200 metres for their share in the $20 million prize.

Well-known horse trader and breeder Max Whitby is an original slot holder for The Everest and lifted the lid on the behind the scenes negotiating to secure a horse for the race. Picture: Jason McCawley/Getty Images “Max and I have had a long relationship, it was pretty straight forward to Max at the end of the day there were offers that were considerably better,” he told theEverest slot holders don't have time to rue on missed opportunities so Whitby and Werrett were quickly fixed on the other contenders competing in early September.

When picking a horse for a slot the holders must balance beating other slot holders and selecting a runner, weeks out from the jump, which will hopefully be at its peak for The Everest. “He actually saw Joe a few months ago and spoke to him and I’ve spoken to him and I know Jamie Walter, head of the syndication, a great mate of mine,” he said.

The 1200 metre sprint race is only in its seventh year but has dominated Sydney’s Spring Carnival and created plenty of uproar with Racing Victoria as the biggest competitor to the Melbourne Cup.
