Melbourne is the only Australian capital city where it is legal for motorcyclists to park on footpaths as long as they do not obstruct pedestrians, parked cars or delivery vehicles.But a council report said that during the morning and afternoon peaks 14 per cent of central city footpaths were so crowded that people had to walk on the kerb or road.
“This proposal will significantly improve the safety and amenity of pedestrians in the central city,” the report says. “This will also make navigating footpaths easier for people using wheelchairs, mobility scooters and prams.” By 2030, Melbourne City Council aims to have 300 extra motorcycle parking bays on streets as alternatives to parking on footpaths.
The Victorian Motorcycle Council’s media representative John Eacott said the motorcycle council accepted footpaths were becoming increasingly crowded, especially with food delivery scooters.
