A scientific advisory panel has recommended that the platypus be listed as vulnerable in Victoria, with its numbers declining due to habitat destruction as well as drought and bushfire exacerbated by climate change | npomalley

A scientific advisory panel has recommended that the platypus be listed as vulnerable in Victoria, with its numbers declining due to habitat destruction as well as drought and bushfire exacerbated by climate change.

"The platypus is not at immediate threat of extinction, but if we keep down this pathway it is heading that way," Mr Griffiths said. "And you’ve got to remember that this research was done before the bushfires."Under Victorian threatened species law the term vulnerable specifies that the animal faces "a high risk of extinction in the wild in the medium-term future".

Smaller populations in fragmented habitats were at greater risk of population crashes due to other threats, such as predation from foxes, dogs and cats.
