Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for convicted rapists and paedophiles to be publicly hanged or chemically castrated for their crimes.

Last week, a woman was raped by two men after she ran out of petrol and her car broke down on a highway near Lahore.

“You do not know the real statistics as well, because it’s under-reported. People do not report it as they are scared or are ashamed, women are ashamed, no one wants to speak.” As an alternative to the death penalty, he suggested an alternative punishment: to “chemically or surgically castrate” rapists, depending on the severity of the crime.

During the National Assembly yesterday, Mr Khan said that his cabinet is working on introducing new measures so that sex offenders realise they will face serious consequences for their crimes.Policemen escort one of the two suspects in the case from a local court in Lahore.
