Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed disappointment over the cancellation of a major ice hockey tournament in Melbourne due to safety concerns related to rising anti-Israel sentiment.

The Prime Minister has reacted to the 'unfortunate decision' to cancel a major ice hockey tournament in Melbourne amid 'escalating anti-Israel activities' in the city. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has described the cancellation of a major ice hockey event in Melbourne over concerns about 'escalating anti-Israel activities' in the city as 'unfortunate' but said most Australians would not even be familiar with the sport.

Mr Albanese made the remarks on Tuesday morning just before Ice Hockey Australia moved to 'clarify' its decision to pull out of hosting the Ice Hockey World Championship Division II - Group A tournament. The event was set to be held at the O'Brien Icehouse in Docklands in late April and early May, involving Australia, Israel, Belgium, Serbia, the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates. But this week it emerged the event would not be going ahead in the Victorian capital after safety and security fears were raised over Israel's involvement, weeks after the terror attack on the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne. Picture: NewsWire / John Gass Mr Albanese told Channel Nine's Today show that Australia still has the ability to host major sporting events despite the cancellation, as he moved to again condemn antisemitism. 'We've just hosted a wonderful cricket Test series and you were just commenting in the sports section there about the upcoming Australian Open and Australia in tennis. Australia can host wonderful sporting events and we should,' the Prime Minister said. 'This is a decision made by Ice Hockey Australia. They're not a body, I've got to say, I'm familiar with and it's not a sport I'm familiar with, like most Australians, I think. 'But we should be opposed, and are, as a country to any form of racism, but particularly to antisemitism
