Prime Minister Scott Morrison says while Australia should not be locked down, the lockdowns are appropriate in Victoria, which has suffered “a big setback” in the fight against COVID-19. “The Victorian situation is very concerning, but we are hopeful is those figures starting to level out,” he said. “As the effects of the lockdown kick in, hopefully we see new case numbers.

“That demonstrates in New South Wales how effectively the states can respond to this, and the best protection to live alongside the virus and to open up your economy — you don’t protect your economy by continually shutting things down,” Mr Morrison said. “That’s what you have to do when things get to the point they have in Victoria.
