Anthony Albanese says a lack of Australian leadership opened the door to China in the Pacific ahead of first meeting with Solomon Islands leader Manasseh Sogavare.

| Anthony Albanese has vowed relations with his Solomon Islands counterpart Manasseh Sogavare will be better, echoing US Vice President Kamala Harris that Australia and the US had neglected the Pacific, allowing China to steal a march in the region.

“But we will have very much a respectful discussion. We respect the sovereignty of nations in the Pacific and I will be listening as well to what Prime Minister Sogavare has to say.this afternoon.” US vice president Kamala Harris addresses the Pacific Islands Forum in Suva as Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong looks on.Asked to respond to Ms Harris’ observation, Mr Albanese acknowledged a lack of Australian leadership in the Pacific had been problematic.

Mr Albanese said in his discussions with Pacific leaders, climate change was the number one issue that came up, although Senator Wong was noncommittal about Australia rejoining the UN’s Green Climate Fund, which finances projects in developing countries.
