Opinion: Pokemon cards taught my son the evils of the world | Doug Hendrie

A while back I brought out my best dad joke. “How do you get Pikachu on a bus?” I asked the children, grinning ahead of time. They looked totally blank. “What’s Pikachu?” my son asked.Pokemon cards were back in vogue. But nothing lasts forever. If only I’d waited six months. Time is a circle and I have the proof. Pokemon cards arrived at my kids’ school and spread like nits through a class of preps. It was like the late ’90s all over again.

The son I picked up at 3.30pm no longer resembled a child rich in Pokemon. This was a deflated child. One who had learned a bitter truth. His wealth of cards were almost all fakes. My son sat me down. He laid out his devalued cards. And together, the entire family learned about the evils of the world. “Look at the shade of blue,” son said. “The real ones have a special blue. And rub your fingers on the card, to test the cardboard.”We dutifully tested the cards and found them wanting.

Pokemon wasn’t over. Not nearly. Consumer demand grew and grew. They chewed through our paltry supplies and we had to buy more. Soon I found myself scouring overseas websites for Pokemon cards, specifically fakes that look real. Two weeks later, they arrived. Things of beauty, shiny and golden or even metallic. They shimmered. They were so pretty no one cared if they were fake.
