A 19-year-old polar bear and mother to two cubs has died suddenly at Queensland's Sea World theme park.
The polar bear, Liya, died unexpectedly at Polar Bear Shores on the Gold Coast on Saturday night and leaves behind her cubs Mishka, who also lives at Sea World, and Henry, who lives in Canada. Polar bear Liya died suddenly aged 19 at the weekend in her enclosure at Sea World on the Gold Coast."Liya lived a long and enriched life at Sea World and her legacy to the ongoing conservation and education efforts of polar bears will continue through her cubs," Sea World posted on Facebook.Advertisement
"In her 18 years at Sea World, she has helped generations of park guests gain a better appreciation for polar bears and the marine environment."According to the US Seaworld Parks and Entertainment company, polar bears can live 20 to 30 years, but only a small percentage live past 15-18. The oldest known polar bear in the Arctic lived 32 years, while the oldest known polar bear in captivity lived 45 years.
