Premier Chris Minns said police made an operational decision to manage the planned rally, but described the scenes as completely abhorrent.
Police say they permitted pro-Palestine protesters to march to the Sydney Opera House because it was better to manage their movement than try to block it, as the government faces questions about why the rally was allowed to go ahead and Jewish people were warned to stay home.
Minns said the government and the vast majority of the state unambiguously stood with the Jewish community of NSW. Cooke said the Israel-Palestine conflict was a “strongly emotive issue”, but warned: “We do not expect people to bring conflict from other places to the streets of Sydney, and violence will not be tolerated.”Minns defended the government’s decision to light up the sails of the Opera House in blue and white, the colours of the Israeli flag, saying the majority of opinion in the state condemned the massacre of civilians by Hamas militants.
NSW Opposition Leader Mark Speakman accused the government of failing to protect Sydney’s Jewish community after police encouraged them to stay home. He seized on remarks by Attorney-General Michael Daley, who told 2GB radio on Tuesday he was “not across” what happened at the protest, but people should stay home when the streets are not safe.
