Police in Texas respond to synagogue ‘hostage’ situation
Photograph: Jessika Harkay/APPhotograph: Jessika Harkay/APAuthorities are negotiating with a man who has reportedly taken people hostage at a synagogue in Colleyville,The Colleyville police said they were conducting Swat operations on the block where Congregation Beth Israel is located and said that all residents in the immediate area were being evacuated.
The incident took place during an online livestream of the Shabbat service at the synagogue in Colleyville, in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The livestream cut off at around 2pm local time., a man could be heard on the livestream angrily talking about religion, his sister and that he thought he was going to die. “You got to do something,” the man said, according to the newspaper. “I don’t want to see this guy dead.” The stream cut off shortly after his tirade.
The American Jewish Committee said it was “deeply concerned” about the hostage situation at the synagogue. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the local Jewish community at this time,” the organization tweeted. “We will continue to monitor the situation as it develops.”
