Police have made a major breakthrough in their search for the body of missing Ballarat mum Samantha Murphy with what appears to be a mobile phone being discovered during a fresh search.

Footage from the search shows police placing an evidence marker and photographing what appears to be a mobile phone on the banks of a body of water. “Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad have located some items of interest in Buninyong this morning during their search for Samantha Murphy," the Police spokesperson said in a statement. "At this stage we are not providing further information about the items until that testing has been completed."
Patrick Stephenson was charged with murder over Ms Murphy's disappearance in March, with police alleging the 22-year-old had killed the Ballarat mother in a"deliberate attack". Police announced on Wednesday morning they were conducting a fresh"targeted" search in Ballarat area.
